Temporary Exhibit: Kingston War Ships: 1812 - 1814
at the Marine Museum of the Great Lakes at Kingston

The Marine Museum of the Great Lakes at Kingston and the Cataraqui Archaeological Research Foundation present,"Kingston War Ships: 1812 - 1814", a collaborative exhibit that tells the story of Kingston's pivotal involvement in the War of 1812.

The naval war on the Great Lakes quickly escalated to an arms race to build the most ships with the greatest fire power. A shipbuilding race escalated between the Royal Navy dockyard at Kingston and the American counterpart in Sackets Harbor, New York. Most of the British Lake Ontario ships were built at the Royal Navy dockyard on Point Frederick in Kingston. Whichever navy had the largest ships with the most cannons controlled the Lake. Both sides in this conflict understood that control of the Great Lakes, especially Lake Ontario, could determine the outcome of the War of 1812.
